Local Pack

The Local Pack is the cluster of nearby business listings — usually a small map paired with two or three map-linked results — that Google surfaces when a search carries local intent.

What it means in RankGear

In RankGear’s Google Maps analysis, the Local Pack is the map-anchored block of business results returned for a geographically sensitive query. Because these results are tied to place rather than to a single national ranking, RankGear reads them from a specific coordinate center rather than assuming one position holds everywhere. What appears in the pack for a given search depends on where the searcher is standing, so the tool treats each measured point as its own observation.

How to interpret it

Before drawing conclusions from Local Pack positions, pin down the conditions that produced them: the exact coordinate center, the data provider, the grid spacing, the depth (how far down the results were read), and which business identity is being tracked. Two runs that differ on any of these are not directly comparable. A position is only meaningful next to the point it was measured from — a business can sit near the top of the pack a few blocks one way and fall out of it a few blocks the other.

Example

A coffee roaster is tracked across a grid of measurement points around its neighborhood. At a point two blocks north the business appears in the Local Pack; at a point across the river it is absent from the returned results; at a third point the provider returns an error and no ranking is recorded for that cell. The same query produced three different outcomes purely because the coordinate center moved.

Important considerations

  • Local Pack results are strongly proximity-sensitive — they shift with coordinates, zoom level, provider data, and the time of the query.
  • A missing result and a provider error mean different things: one says the business was not in the returned set, the other says no reliable reading was obtained. Keep them separate.
  • Pack positions are comparative indicators of local visibility, not a Google ranking score, and appearing in the pack does not by itself explain why — correlation is not causation.
  • Compare like with like: only line up runs that share the same center, provider, spacing, and depth.
