What it means in RankGear
In a Local Grid report, RankGear queries local map results from a fan of coordinate points spread across an area and records where the tracked business ranks at each one. When the business is absent from the results returned for a point, down to the depth you set as Top N, that cell is marked Not Found rather than being left blank or assigned a number. It is a deliberate, successful outcome of the check: the provider answered, the results were read, and your business simply was not among them at that spot. That distinguishes it cleanly from a Provider Error, where no usable result came back at all.
How to interpret it
Read Not Found against the depth you configured. A point marked Not Found under a Top 20 depth only tells you the business fell outside the first 20 positions there; it might well have ranked 25th or 40th, which a deeper scan would have captured. Before drawing conclusions from a patch of Not Found cells, confirm the coordinate center, provider, grid spacing, depth, and the exact business identity being tracked, since a mismatch in any of those can turn genuine rankings into apparent gaps. Clusters of Not Found toward the edges of a grid usually reflect distance from the business location, while Not Found near the center is a stronger signal worth investigating.
Example
A dental practice runs a five-by-five Local Grid at Top 20 depth. Near the office the business ranks 3rd and 5th, a few points out it slips to 14th, and at the far corners of the grid it is marked Not Found because it never appeared in the top 20 there. The map renders those corner cells differently from ranked cells, so the practice can see at a glance how far its visibility reaches before dropping off.
Important considerations
- Not Found is bounded by your Top N depth. Raising the depth can convert some Not Found cells into real rank numbers, so compare grids only when the depth setting matches.
- It is not the same as a Provider Error. Not Found means a valid result set was read and the business was absent; a provider error means no usable data came back.
- Map rankings are highly proximity-sensitive and shift with coordinates, zoom, provider data, and time. A point can read Not Found today and ranked next week without any change on your end.
- Grid results are comparative indicators of local visibility, not Google ranking scores, and a pattern of Not Found cells does not by itself cause or measure ranking performance.
