The variation set comes from the run — the terms RankGear is tracking alongside the primary keyword — and only the text within H5 elements is scanned. The result is a single number: how many variation matches were found in that zone across the page.
How RankGear measures it
RankGear parses H5 text and counts case-insensitive whole-word matches from the variation set. Longer terms are processed first, and matched text is consumed so it cannot be counted again — which prevents overlapping phrases from being double-counted. The output is a count of occurrences, so a single H5 can contribute more than one match, and several H5 elements are tallied together.
