What it means in RankGear
In the Local Grid report, RankGear pings the ranking provider once for every point on the grid and records what comes back. Provider Error marks a point where that request did not complete — a timeout, a rate limit, an API failure, or a malformed response — so there is no rank data for that cell. It is not a ranking outcome. It is the absence of one, caused by the request itself failing rather than by anything about the business.
How to interpret it
Read Provider Error as missing data, not as a rank of zero and not as “not found.” Before you draw conclusions from the pattern across the grid, confirm the coordinate center, provider, grid spacing, depth, and the tracked business identity are all correct. A handful of errors scattered across the grid almost always points to a transient provider or network hiccup, so re-run the grid and those cells usually fill in with real ranks. If the errors cluster in one area or persist across runs, look at the provider connection, quota, and rate limits rather than reading anything into local visibility.

Example
A 5×5 grid runs for “emergency plumber.” The business ranks 3 at the center point and drops to Not Found two cells to the north. One cell to the southeast comes back as a Provider Error because that particular lookup timed out. That southeast cell is blank data, not a bad ranking — re-running the grid returns a genuine rank for it.
Important considerations
- Provider Error means the request failed, not that the business is invisible — never count it as a rank or fold it in with Not Found.
- Map rankings are highly proximity-sensitive and shift with coordinates, zoom level, provider data, and time, so a re-run may return a real rank where an error appeared.
- A few scattered errors are usually transient; errors that cluster or repeat across runs suggest a provider connection, quota, or rate-limit problem worth checking.
- Local Grid results are comparative local-visibility indicators from a third-party provider, not Google ranking scores — a clean grid does not by itself mean a page ranks.
