Word Count is the number of word-like tokens (3–65 characters) in the page content RankGear extracts after cleaning the HTML. It is a size measure for comparing your page against the field ranking for the same query — not a quality score, and not a minimum any search engine imposes.

What it measures
Word Count gives a consistent way to compare the overall amount of written content on your page with the pages ranking for the same query. It is a size measurement, not a judgment of quality: a higher number does not automatically make a page more useful, more relevant, or more likely to rank.
How RankGear measures it
RankGear renders the page; removes HTML markup, scripts, styles, and comments; collapses repeated whitespace; then counts word-like tokens between 3 and 65 characters (apostrophes and hyphens may sit inside a token). Tokens shorter than three characters are excluded. To preserve report compatibility, some head text such as title or metadata may also contribute to the cleaned-content count.
| If the page is… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Materially below the run’s deficit goal, and Word Count is a meaningful signal | Expand with information that satisfies the intent — explanations, evidence, examples, definitions, comparisons, process detail, FAQs, related entities. |
| At or above the field | Don’t pad. Remove repetition and filler that adds length without usefulness. |
How to optimize it
Let the count change as a result of better content. Improve completeness and clarity first — add what helps the reader satisfy the query, and cut what doesn’t. A word-count deficit is most actionable when the factor also shows meaningful correlation or broad competitor adoption in the run.
Important considerations
- Word count is not a ranking guarantee, and not a minimum imposed by a search engine.
- The right amount of content depends on the query, page type, audience, and competitive field.
- A strong deficit is more actionable when correlation or competitor adoption is also high.
- Compare results from the same RankGear version and run configuration — extraction rules matter.
