What it measures
Unabridged Word Count counts a broad set of word-like tokens in cleaned page content, including one-character tokens. It represents content volume without applying the stricter filters used by some other word metrics, so it captures the fullest sense of how much text a page carries.
How RankGear measures it
RankGear applies a compatibility token pattern to the cleaned content. A token starts with a word character and permits up to 64 following word characters, apostrophes, or hyphens; each matching token counts once. Because the pattern is deliberately broad, it can include numbers, single letters, and underscore-containing strings, so the total may differ from the count an editorial word processor would report.

How to optimize it

Just as readily, remove filler and repetition even when that lowers the count — the goal is fitting the depth the search intent calls for, not maximizing tokens.
