What it measures
This factor reports the backlink total populated in RankGear’s off-page dataset for the result being analyzed. The number is not computed by RankGear from a crawl of the live web — it is the count currently supplied by the configured backlink provider for that URL.
How RankGear measures it
RankGear reads the backlinks field stored for the exact result URL and reports its value. When no data is present for that URL, the field returns 0. This factor is distinct from RG-BLK-018, which reads a separate search-result domain backlink field even though it shares the same display name — so a page and its domain can show very different totals.

Treat this count as an observation about link volume rather than a number to inflate: a page that ranks alongside a higher backlink count has not been shown to rank because of it, and adding low-value links does not move the signal in any meaningful direction.
Important considerations
- Two factor IDs share this display name — RG-BLK-017 reads the URL-level field, RG-BLK-018 reads a separate domain-level field — so check which one you are looking at.
- Provider scope and freshness differ: the total reflects whatever your configured provider has indexed and how recently it refreshed, not the complete live link graph.
- Quantity does not establish quality. A large count can be dominated by low-value or spam links, and a small count of strong editorial links can matter more.
- Zero may mean missing data rather than an absence of backlinks, so do not read it as proof that a URL has none.
- This is a prioritization signal that relates to position within a measured result set, not a lever that makes a page rank or guarantees any ranking. Correlation is not causation.
