Exact Match Density

Exact Match Density is the rate at which a page uses the exact, verbatim target keyword phrase, expressed against the denominator the report defines (typically the page’s total word or term count).

What it means in RankGear

In the Density sheet and the On-Page Audit, Exact Match Density counts only literal, word-for-word occurrences of the target phrase — not synonyms, reorderings, or partial matches — and reports them as a share of the denominator each report defines. Because the metric is normalized this way, you can compare the same page against the ranking field on a like-for-like basis rather than reading a raw count that grows simply because a page is longer.

How to interpret it

Read Exact Match Density as a comparative signal, not a lever. The useful question is how a page sits relative to the competitors already ranking for the query, not whether it hits a fixed percentage. A figure well below the field can flag a phrase that is barely present, while a figure far above it usually points to forced repetition rather than better coverage. Move the number by adding genuinely useful information and natural phrasing, and let the density follow — treat any target as a range to check against peers, never a quota to fill.

ReadingWhat it suggests
Well below the fieldThe exact phrase may be underused; the page could be leaning on unrelated wording or missing the query outright.
In line with competitorsVerbatim coverage is comparable to ranking pages; attention is better spent on entities and supporting concepts.
Well above the fieldLikely over-optimization or stuffing; repetition past the field’s norm adds risk, not authority.

Example

Suppose you are auditing a page targeting “cold brew coffee maker.” The On-Page Audit shows the page uses that exact phrase eight times across 1,200 words, giving an Exact Match Density noticeably higher than the ranking field’s typical share. The Density sheet also shows the top pages carrying the phrase fewer times while covering related concepts — grind size, steep time, filtration — that this page repeats the head phrase instead of addressing. The read is not “add more matches” but “trim the forced repetition and cover the missing subtopics.”

Important considerations

  • Density figures are comparative indicators drawn from the analyzed field. They are correlational context, not a Google ranking score, and a higher density does not make a page rank.
  • Provider and report scales differ; read the number against the field in the same report rather than against a memorized percentage from elsewhere.
  • The metric counts only exact, verbatim matches — variations and close paraphrases are measured by related density metrics, not this one.
  • Preserve search intent when adjusting wording. Repetition, keyword stuffing, and unsupported claims do not build topical authority and can work against the page.
