Deficit

A deficit is the direction-aware gap between the tracked page’s value for a factor and the goal RankGear has set for it, reported only while the page still has room to move toward that goal.

What it means in RankGear

Deficit is the per-factor number in the results table and workbook that tells you how far your tracked page sits from its selected goal. It carries a sign, so it shows not just the size of the gap but the direction the page needs to move to close it. RankGear reports a deficit only where improvement is still indicated: once the page has met or passed the goal for a factor, that factor no longer shows a gap to work on.

How to interpret it

Read a deficit next to the target page, the comparison set it was derived from, the deficit strategy you selected, and the correlation backing the factor. Because the value is direction-aware, its sign tells you which way to move and its magnitude tells you how much ground is left. Treat no single deficit as a target in isolation: a large gap on a weakly correlated factor usually matters less than a smaller gap on a factor the SERP clearly rewards.

What you readWhat it tells you
Direction (sign)Which way the page must move to reach the goal
MagnitudeHow much distance remains between the page and the goal
No deficit shownThe page already meets or exceeds the goal for that factor

Example

Say you are tracking a page for “commercial roofing warranty” and the workbook shows a deficit on the word-count factor: the page runs 900 words while the goal derived from the ranking set is about 1,450. The deficit is roughly 550 words in the “add more” direction, so RankGear can turn that measured gap into a prioritized action to expand the page instead of leaving you to eyeball the comparison yourself.

Important considerations

  • A deficit is evidence drawn from the measured SERP for your query, not a universal rule and not proof that closing it will cause a ranking change.
  • The value depends on the goal and comparison set you chose; switch the deficit strategy or the competitor set and the reported gap can shift.
  • Correlation is not causation. A deficit reflects how the tracked page differs from the comparison set, not a score that Google assigns to the page.
  • Some factors rest on provider metrics measured on their own comparative scale, so read a deficit as relative distance to close, not an absolute figure to hit exactly.
