Number of Trademarks

Number of Trademarks counts how many recognized trademark symbols (™) appear in a page’s rendered, script-free body. It is a plain tally of a character pattern — not a check of who owns a mark or whether any trademark claim is valid.

What it measures

This factor counts recognized trademark symbols in the page’s body markup. RankGear tallies each occurrence of the trademark sign (™) found in the rendered, script-free body, returning a whole number for the page. It reflects how often the symbol appears in copy — nothing about which words are trademarked or whether the marks are owned by the site.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear counts the literal trademark symbol along with selected HTML entity forms, including ™ and its numeric equivalents. Every match anywhere in the measured body adds to the total. RankGear does not identify trademarked words or verify ownership — it only recognizes the symbol forms below.

What RankGear looks for

™ literal trademark sign (U+2122)
™ named HTML entity
™ decimal numeric entity
™ hexadecimal numeric entity

How to optimize it

Use trademark symbols only where they are legally and stylistically appropriate, following your brand and counsel guidance. Maintain accurate attribution without cluttering the copy. Treat this count as an observation of your page, not a target to push up — adding symbols to move the number serves no reader and no ranking.

Important considerations

  • The count is not proof of trust or of any legal right — it only tells you how many symbols are present.
  • The same mark repeated across templated regions (headers, footers, product cards) inflates the result.
  • Registered-trademark symbols (®) are not part of this pattern and are not counted here.
  • Do not add symbols for SEO purposes; the number is a description of your markup, not a lever.
  • Correlation is not causation: this count relates to position within a measured result set as a prioritization signal — more trademark symbols do not make a page rank.
