Search Result Link Text Length

Search Result Link Text Length reports how long the clickable title link is in a page’s Google result, measured as UTF-16 code units. It describes the result presentation Google actually served for your query — not a tag on your page — so treat it as an observation, not a lever you set directly.

What it measures

This factor reports the length of the result’s parsed link text — the visible, clickable title line of the search result as it appeared in the captured SERP. It is a single number describing how much link text the engine chose to display for that result.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear returns the number of UTF-16 code units in the captured SearchResult.linkText field. It counts code units in the parsed result title link exactly as scraped from the SERP — no thresholds, no target, just the raw length of the served link text.

How to optimize it

Write a concise, descriptive title that communicates the page’s value and fits how results are likely to be presented. Prioritize clarity over hitting a particular character count. Because this factor records what the engine displayed rather than what you published, treat the number as an observation of result presentation rather than a target to tune toward — your page title influences it, but the engine has the final say.

Important considerations

  • Search engines can rewrite result link text and summaries independently of your page markup, so the displayed length may differ from the title you set.
  • The captured SERP field can vary by query, location, device, language, and time — the same page can return different link-text lengths across captures.
  • UTF-16 length is not always identical to the user-perceived character count, since some characters occupy more than one code unit.
  • Treat the value as observed result presentation, not a directly controlled tag.
  • This is a prioritization signal that relates to how a result is presented within a measured SERP; it does not by itself cause or guarantee a ranking position.
