Meta Description Length

Meta Description Length counts the UTF-16 code units in a page’s meta description, letting you compare its structural length against the descriptions on ranking pages. It measures length alone — not writing quality, keyword relevance, or whether a search engine will actually display your text as the snippet.

What it measures

Meta Description Length measures the number of UTF-16 code units in the page’s meta description. It helps you compare the structural length of the target page’s description with the descriptions present on ranking pages. The factor does not score writing quality, keyword relevance, persuasiveness, uniqueness, or whether a search engine will use the description as its displayed snippet.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear examines the rendered document head for a meta tag whose name is description and reads its content value. It recognizes both the standard name-then-content arrangement and the reversed content-then-name arrangement supported by RankGear’s parser. It then returns the UTF-16 length of the captured content: most ordinary characters count as one, while some characters outside the basic multilingual range — including many emoji — use two UTF-16 code units. A missing or unrecognized description returns 0.

How to optimize it

Write an accurate summary that helps a searcher understand the page and choose the result. Include the primary topic and meaningful differentiators naturally, then compare its measured length with the keyword-specific field and your selected target. If the description is much shorter than the competitive field, add useful context rather than filler; if it is unusually long, preserve the most important message early and remove secondary wording that is unlikely to help the searcher. Treat the number as an observation to compare against ranking pages, not a fixed target to hit.

Important considerations

  • There is no universal character count that guarantees a search engine will display the description unchanged.
  • Search engines may rewrite snippets according to the query.
  • UTF-16 length is not the same as visual pixel width.
  • A value of 0 should prompt a check for a missing, malformed, or unusually ordered meta tag.
  • Evaluate length together with exact-match, variation, readability, and click-appeal considerations. This factor relates to position within a measured result set — it is a prioritization signal, not a guarantee of ranking.
