Variations in H1-H6 Tags

Variations in H1-H6 Tags counts how many times the run’s keyword variations appear across a page’s complete heading outline, from H1 down to H6. It returns one combined occurrence total for every level together, so the aggregate does not reveal which heading level produced each match, and repeating terms can raise it without adding topical coverage.

What it measures

This factor counts occurrences of the run’s keyword variations throughout the complete heading hierarchy. Every heading level from H1 to H6 is included, and each time a tracked variation appears in that heading text it adds to the total. The result is a single number for the whole outline — a view of how often the page’s section and subsection labels reach for query-related language across all six levels at once.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear parses all H1-H6 text, then performs case-insensitive, whole-word matching against the run’s variation set, testing the longest variations first. When a stretch of heading text matches, it is consumed so the same text cannot be counted again by a shorter overlapping variation. RankGear totals every remaining match across all six heading levels into the final occurrence count. Because matching is longest-first and whole-word, longer overlapping phrases are counted before shorter ones, and casing in the headings does not affect the result.

If the page is…Do this
Short or tightly focused on a single subtopicA low value can be correct — don’t pad the outline with variations the sections don’t actually cover.
Broad, spanning many subtopics competitors also addressGive each real section and subsection a descriptive heading that uses the natural variation it is genuinely about.
Repeating similar headings to lift the numberConsolidate or rephrase — repeated terms raise the score without improving topical coverage.

How to optimize it

Use a varied, descriptive outline that incorporates relevant terms where they genuinely identify the page’s sections and subtopics. Treat the number as an observation about your heading structure rather than a target to maximize: a variation belongs in a heading because it accurately labels the section beneath it, not to inflate the total. Broaden the terminology naturally as the outline moves through distinct subtopics, and keep the heading hierarchy valid and clear for the reader rather than stuffing variations to push the count up.

Important considerations

  • The aggregate combines all six levels into one total and does not show which level — H1, H2, and so on — produced each match.
  • Repeated terms can raise the score without improving topical coverage, so more occurrences is not automatically better.
  • Longer overlapping phrases are counted before shorter ones, because matching runs longest-first and consumes matched text to avoid double-counting.
  • Maintain a valid heading hierarchy and reader clarity — a high count means nothing if the outline stops making sense to a person.
  • This is a correlation-based prioritization signal measured within a result set — it relates to position, it does not guarantee a ranking or make a page rank.
