Entities in Title Tag

Entities in Title Tag counts how many times terms from the run’s entity list appear in a page’s cleaned HTML title. It is an occurrence count, not a count of distinct entity types, and a value of 0 can mean either that no listed entity matched or that no entity list was available for the run.

What it measures

This factor counts occurrences of terms from the run’s entity list inside the cleaned page title. It helps show whether ranking titles name the people, places, organizations, products, or concepts associated with the query. Because it tallies every match, it is an occurrence count rather than a count of unique entity types — the same entity named twice contributes two.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear extracts the title from the rendered document head and lowercases it once. For each entry in the entity list, it counts case-insensitive, word-boundary matches against that lowercased title and sums the results across all entries. If no entity list is available, the factor returns 0. Entity entries come from the configured provider and the forced-entity settings used by the run, so the same title can score differently under different entity configurations.

How to read it

ValueWhat it suggests
0No listed entity matched the title — or no entity list was available for the run. The two cases are indistinguishable from the value alone.
1One entity occurrence — typically a single central subject named once in the title.
2 or moreMultiple entity occurrences. Confirm the title still reads naturally and that the extra names genuinely define the page rather than pad the count.

How to optimize it

Include an entity in the title when it is central to the page and helps searchers understand the result — for example a location, organization, person, product, or recognized subject. Keep the title accurate and concise. Do not insert loosely related entity names merely to lift the count; if an entity needs substantial explanation, cover it in the page content and reserve the title for the entity that genuinely defines the page. Treat this factor as an observation about how ranking titles are worded, not a target to maximize: a higher count does not make a page rank, and more occurrences are not automatically better in a short title.

Important considerations

  • A value of 0 can mean either that no entity matched or that no entity list was available — the number alone does not distinguish them.
  • The configured provider and forced-entity settings directly affect what counts as an entity, and therefore the measurement.
  • More entity occurrences are not automatically better in a short title.
  • The factor counts matches only; it does not judge whether an entity is used accurately or appropriately.
  • This is a correlation with position within a measured result set, not a cause of ranking. Read it alongside title length, title variations, search intent, and entity coverage elsewhere on the page.
