Number of Ads

Number of Ads sums the recognized Google, Amazon, and AdRoll advertising signatures RankGear finds in a page’s rendered, script-free body. It is a technical count of matched URL patterns, not a tally of visible ads — and one Google DoubleClick signature is deliberately included twice, so a matching page can be double-counted.

What it measures

Number of Ads totals the recognized advertising signatures on a page — specifically the Google, Amazon, and AdRoll patterns RankGear supports. Rather than judging whether an ad is visible, painted, or profitable, it registers how many of those known advertising fingerprints appear in the page body. The result is a single count that describes the density of recognized ad-network signatures, not the number of ad units a reader actually sees.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear adds up the supported URL-pattern counts for each ad family and returns the sum. One Google DoubleClick signature is deliberately included in the pattern set twice for compatibility, so a page that matches it contributes to the count more than once — matching occurrences can be double-counted by design. The measurement runs over the rendered, script-free page body, and the value it returns is a signature-occurrence total, not a visible-ad count.

Signature familyWhat it recognizes
GoogleSupported Google ad URL patterns, incl. one DoubleClick signature counted twice
AmazonSupported Amazon advertising URL patterns
AdRollSupported AdRoll advertising URL patterns
Number of Ads = count(Google patterns) + count(Amazon patterns) + count(AdRoll patterns)
(one Google DoubleClick pattern is matched twice)

How to optimize it

Treat this number as an observation about your ad footprint, not a target to raise or lower. Audit the page’s ad inventory, the scripts that load it, its layout impact, consent handling, and the revenue each placement earns. Remove obsolete or dead ad calls, and avoid intrusive placements that harm the reading experience. Because the count reflects recognized signatures rather than rendered units, a change in the number is a prompt to review what is actually loading — not a score to game.

Important considerations

  • The set of supported signatures is incomplete — ad networks and patterns outside it are not counted.
  • One Google pattern is double-counted by design, so the total can exceed the number of distinct matches.
  • Hidden or dormant code can contribute to the count even when nothing is shown to the reader.
  • Read the value as a technical signal about recognized ad signatures, not an exact ad total.
  • This is a measured signal that relates to patterns seen across a result set; it does not by itself make a page rank or cause a ranking — correlation is not causation.
