Number of Backlinks reports the domain-level backlink count that the search provider carries for a result. It is a whole-domain popularity signal, not a per-page one — and because it is provider-supplied, a gap in the data shows up as 0 rather than as “no links.”

What it measures
This factor reports the domain-level backlink count carried on the search result. It reflects how many links the provider attributes to the whole domain behind a listing, so it is a measure of aggregate site-wide link popularity rather than the links pointing at any single URL.
How RankGear measures it
RankGear reads the domainGoogleBacklinkCount value supplied with the result. When that data is missing, the factor returns 0. Note that RG-BLK-017 shares the same display name but reads a different, exact-URL off-page dataset — always use the factor ID to tell the two apart, because a domain count and a page count are not interchangeable.
| If the value is… | How to read it |
|---|---|
| A high count | The provider attributes many links to the whole domain — broad site-wide link popularity, spread across every page, not this URL alone. |
| A low count | Fewer domain-level links are recorded. Weigh this against link quality and relevance, not volume alone. |
| 0 | Either no links are recorded, or the provider returned no data for this result. Confirm before treating it as a true absence of backlinks. |
How to optimize it
Treat this as an observation of standing, not a dial to turn. Domain-level link counts grow as a byproduct of building sustainable authority: publishing useful content, earning a reputation, forming partnerships, doing public relations, and attracting genuine citations. There is no way to set the number directly, and chasing raw volume misses the point — quality and relevance of the linking sources matter more than the count itself.
Important considerations
- Always use the factor ID to distinguish duplicate names — RG-BLK-018 (domain) and RG-BLK-017 (exact URL) share the display name “Number of Backlinks.”
- Domain and page counts are not interchangeable; this factor is a whole-domain metric.
- Provider data gaps can appear as 0, which is not the same as a confirmed absence of links.
- Quality and relevance of linking sources outweigh raw volume.
- A higher count relates to — it does not cause — stronger positions within a measured result set. This is a prioritization signal, never a guarantee of ranking.
