A Maps Result is a single business listing returned by a supported Maps provider for a specific keyword and coordinate, normalized into a consistent shape so listings from different providers can be compared side by side.

What it means in RankGear
A Maps Result is the atomic unit behind every local grid and map report. When RankGear queries a Maps provider for a keyword at a given coordinate, each business the provider returns is captured as one Maps Result: the listing’s identity, its position at that point, and the supporting fields the provider supplied. Because different providers describe listings in different ways, RankGear normalizes each one into a common structure, so a result from one provider lines up with a result from another and the same tracked business can be followed consistently across the grid.
How to interpret it
A Maps Result is always tied to a specific keyword and a specific point on the map, so read it in that context rather than as a standalone rank. Before drawing conclusions from a pattern of results, confirm the coordinate center the search was run from, the provider that returned it, the grid spacing and depth being checked, and that the tracked business identity matches the listing you actually mean to measure. The same business can appear as a strong result at one coordinate and be absent at another a mile away, and that difference is information about proximity, not a flaw in the data.
Example
A dental practice is tracked across a local grid. At the coordinate closest to the office the provider returns the practice as a Maps Result in position 3. At a point two miles south the provider returns results but the practice is not among them, so that point records no Maps Result for the tracked business. At a third point the provider returns an error and no results are captured at all. The three outcomes look similar on a map but mean different things: ranked here, not found there, and no data at the last point.
Important considerations
- A missing Maps Result and a provider error are not the same thing. “Not found” means the provider returned results and the tracked business was not among them; a provider error means no results were captured, and that point should be read as a gap in the data rather than a rank of zero.
- Map results are highly proximity-sensitive and can change with coordinates, zoom level, provider data, and the time the search ran, so two runs of the same keyword can differ simply because of where or when they were made.
- A Maps Result reflects one provider’s view of local listings, not a Google ranking score. It is a comparative indicator on that provider’s scale and does not on its own explain or cause any ranking.
