What it means in RankGear
When RankGear runs a Maps analysis, it fans a grid of measurement points across an area and records what each point returns. The Landmarks Report is one of the selectable HTML outputs from that run, and it also lands on its own Landmarks tab in the workbook. Rather than reporting your business ranking alone, it captures the landmark-related local results gathered at each grid point during the same pass, giving you a picture of the physical anchors and points of interest that share the map with the business you are tracking.
How to interpret it
Read the Landmarks Report only after you have confirmed the parameters of the run that produced it. Note the exact coordinate center, the map provider, the grid spacing, the search depth, and the tracked business identity before you draw any conclusion from the patterns you see. The same location can look strong or weak depending on where the grid was centered and how tightly the points were spaced, so the landmarks captured are a description of that specific run’s geometry, not a fixed property of the business.
Example
Suppose you run a 5×5 grid centered on a dental practice near a downtown transit hub. The Landmarks Report enumerates the local results tied to nearby landmarks that appeared across those 25 points. At one grid point the practice is found in the pack; at another, a short distance away, it is absent; at a third the provider returns an error and records no result. The report lets you line those outcomes up against the landmarks present at each point instead of guessing why coverage shifts across the block.
Important considerations
- Map rankings are highly proximity-sensitive. What the report shows can change with the coordinate center, zoom level, provider data, and the time the run was taken.
- The landmarks and results are captured for one specific run’s grid geometry. Re-running with a different center, spacing, or depth will produce a different report.
- Provider results are comparative indicators from a third-party map source, not Google ranking scores, and a point showing found, not found, or a provider error reflects that source’s data at that moment.
- Presence near a landmark describes the map’s layout, not a cause of ranking. Correlation between landmark proximity and visibility is not evidence that a landmark makes a page rank.
