Number of H2 Tags

Number of H2 Tags counts the H2 elements in the rendered body of a page, giving you a way to compare how the target page and ranking pages split their content into major supporting sections. It measures quantity only — not whether the headings are useful, ordered, or relevant — so read it as an organization signal, not a target to maximize.

What it measures

Number of H2 Tags counts the H2 elements in the rendered body of the page. It helps you compare how the target page and ranking pages divide their content into major supporting sections beneath the primary heading. The factor measures tag quantity only. It does not judge whether the headings are useful, properly ordered, visible, unique, or related to the query.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear renders the page, removes scripts from the body used for analysis, parses the H2 elements, and returns the number found. H2 elements inserted dynamically can be included when they are present in the rendered DOM captured by RankGear. If no recognized H2 element is present, the factor returns 0.

What RankGear looks for

<h2>Major supporting section</h2>
<h2>Another supporting section</h2>

How to optimize it

Use H2 headings to organize meaningful sections that help visitors scan and understand the page. Each heading should introduce a distinct part of the answer — a process step, service, comparison, feature, requirement, question, or supporting concept. If the target page has substantially fewer H2 headings than the competitive goal, first look for long or poorly organized sections that should be divided. Do not create empty or repetitive headings solely to raise the count. Treat the competitor distribution and your selected deficit strategy as the guide, not the maximum count as a universal target.

If the page is…Do this
Well below the competitive H2 countSplit long or poorly organized sections into distinct, meaningful H2 sections.
Near the competitive H2 countLeave the count alone; refine wording and section content instead.
Well above the competitive H2 countCheck for excessive fragmentation and merge thin or repetitive sections.

Important considerations

  • The appropriate number of H2 tags depends on page length, page type, and search intent.
  • Visual styling does not make an element an H2 unless the HTML uses an H2 tag.
  • A high count can indicate good organization or excessive fragmentation.
  • H2 wording, keyword use, variations, entities, and word counts are measured separately.
  • Use the competitor distribution and selected deficit strategy rather than treating the maximum as a universal target.
  • This is a prioritization signal that relates to position within a measured result set — it does not, on its own, cause or guarantee a ranking.
