What it measures
It counts keyword variations found inside figure captions. The unit of measurement is the caption text itself — the words a page places in its figcaption elements — and the value is a simple count of how many variation matches land there.

RankGear reads capture group two between recognized figcaption tags without an additional cleaning pass, then counts whole-word variations case-insensitively. Because there is no extra cleaning step, whatever sits inside the tags — including nested markup — is part of what gets counted.

Write captions that explain the figure’s meaning or relevance, using topical terms only when they accurately describe the visual. Treat this factor as an observation about caption quality rather than a number to push up: the goal is captions that genuinely describe the image, not captions padded with variations to move the count.
Important considerations
- Nested markup remains in the capture, so anything wrapped inside the caption tags is counted along with the visible text.
- The factor does not verify that the caption is associated with a valid figure.
- Decorative images may not need captions at all, so a low or zero count is not automatically a problem.
- Avoid captions written solely to repeat keywords — they degrade caption quality without describing the visual.
- Correlation is not causation: this count relates to position within a measured result set and is a prioritization signal, not a guarantee that more caption variations make a page rank.
