What it means in RankGear
In a Local Grid report, RankGear positions a grid of ranking markers across a geographic area to show how a business ranks from different points around it. The basemap is what those markers sit on top of — the rendered map tiles showing roads, neighborhoods, coastlines, and place names. It carries no ranking data of its own; its job is orientation. Without it, a green-to-red grid is just colored dots floating in space. With it, you can immediately see that visibility drops off past a particular highway, thins out across a river, or holds strong through the downtown core.
How to interpret it
Read the basemap as reference, not as a metric. The colors and numbers on the grid come from rank checks at each coordinate; the basemap only tells you where those checks happened. Before drawing conclusions from any grid pattern, confirm the underlying setup the basemap is illustrating: the exact coordinate center, the map provider supplying the tiles, the grid spacing and depth, and which business identity is being tracked. Two grids can look different purely because they were centered or spaced differently, and the basemap is your first check on whether you are comparing like with like.
Example
A dental practice runs a 5-by-5 Local Grid centered on its office. On the basemap, the office sits just north of a large park that separates two neighborhoods. The grid shows strong rankings across the northern cells nearest the practice, then a sharp fade in the cells south of the park. Because the basemap makes the park and the road grid visible, the drop reads as a real proximity boundary rather than a data glitch — the practice simply loses ground to competitors closer to the southern neighborhood.
Important considerations
- The basemap is context only. It never contributes to or changes a ranking; it renders the geography that the rank data is plotted against.
- Local map rankings are highly proximity-sensitive. The same business can rank at one grid point, show as not found at an adjacent one, and hit a provider error at a third — the basemap helps you see why, but does not smooth that variance away.
- What the basemap depicts depends on the map provider and can shift with coordinates, zoom level, provider data updates, and time. Note the provider and center when saving a grid so later comparisons stay honest.
- Provider map positions are comparative indicators of local visibility, not Google ranking scores, and a strong or weak grid pattern does not by itself explain why those positions occur.
