A social preview is the title, description, image, and other presentation a platform assembles from a page’s metadata when someone shares its link.

What it means in RankGear
In RankGear, the social preview surfaces inside the Content Report’s social metadata checks. When you audit a target page against its ranking competitors, RankGear reads the markup that governs how the URL renders as a shared card — the Open Graph and equivalent tags that supply a title, description, and image — and reports whether the page carries them. It is a description of the page’s presentation layer for social platforms and messaging apps, not a Google ranking element.
How to interpret it
Treat the social preview as a completeness-and-accuracy check rather than a score. Confirm that each property actually exists, uses the correct format, and points at content a visitor can genuinely see on the page. A preview image or description that references material the page does not contain is a mismatch worth fixing. When RankGear flags that ranking pages carry social markup a target page lacks, read it as a gap in presentation parity, not as evidence that the markup lifts rankings.
| Component | What it supplies |
|---|---|
| Title | The headline shown on the shared card |
| Description | The short summary beneath the title |
| Image | The thumbnail or hero the platform renders |
Example
You run a Content Report on a product page and RankGear notes that four of the five top-ranking competitors declare an Open Graph image while your page declares none. When the URL is pasted into a chat or posted socially, your link renders as a bare text stub while theirs show a captioned image card. The report points you to the missing property so you can add markup that matches the content already on the page.
Important considerations
- Declaring valid social markup makes a page eligible for a rich card; it does not guarantee any platform will display it, since each service applies its own rendering and caching rules.
- Markup should describe real, visible page content. A preview that promises something the page does not deliver is a mismatch, not an optimization.
- Social preview data is a presentation signal for sharing surfaces. It is not a Google ranking factor, and its presence or absence does not, on its own, move organic position — correlation with ranking pages is not causation.
