PAA Answer

The PAA Answer is the text Google shows inside an expanded “People Also Ask” question — the short reply pulled from a page and displayed under the question in the results, captured whenever the provider returns answer text for that question.

What it means in RankGear

When RankGear pulls the People Also Ask box for a keyword, each question can come back with an accompanying answer snippet — the passage Google surfaces when the box is expanded. That snippet is the PAA Answer, and it lands in Workbook Questions alongside the question text itself. Not every question carries one: the field is populated only when the provider actually returns answer text for that question, so some rows show a question with no answer attached. When present, it tells you what Google chose to quote and which source it drew from, which is why it sits next to the question rather than as a separate metric.

How to interpret it

Read a PAA Answer as a snapshot of one query, in one location, on one device, at the moment the provider ran the search — not as a fixed property of the question. Before comparing answers across runs or against a competitor, confirm that the underlying request matched on provider, country, language, device, location, and requested depth; a Top 20 localized pull and a default desktop pull can return different answers for the same question. Treat a missing answer as “none returned this time,” not as evidence the question lacks one, since coverage depends on what the provider supplied for that call.

Example

You run a Workbook for “how long does cold brew last” targeting the United States on mobile. The People Also Ask box returns four questions, and three arrive with PAA Answers — one quoting a two-week figure from a recipe site, another citing refrigeration guidance. The fourth question comes back with no answer text, so its PAA Answer cell is blank. A week later you re-run the same Workbook and the answer that quoted two weeks now cites a different source with a slightly different figure, showing how the surfaced text shifts even when the question stays the same.

Important considerations

  • PAA content changes over time and by location, device, provider, and personalization context, so two runs of the same question can return different answers or none at all.
  • The presence and wording of an answer reflect what Google chose to display for that query on that call — it is a comparative snapshot from the provider, not a Google ranking score, and it does not indicate that the quoted page will rank or continue to be quoted.
  • Keep localization settings identical across the runs you compare; mismatched country, language, device, or depth make PAA Answers non-comparable.
