In RankGear, a distribution is the shape of a set of values — where the numbers cluster, how far they spread, and whether they lean to one side — observed across the pages in a comparison set.

What it means in RankGear

When RankGear compares a factor across the pages it analyzed, it does not just report an average — it plots the full spread of the underlying values in a strategic distribution chart. That chart is the distribution: every page’s measured value laid out so you can see the whole pattern at once. A distribution answers questions an average cannot, such as whether the top results share a tight range for a factor or scatter widely across it, and where your own page sits inside that range.

How to interpret it

Read a distribution in three passes. First the center: roughly where do most pages land? Second the spread: are the values packed into a narrow band or strung out across a wide one? Third the shape: is the pattern balanced, or bunched at one end with a long tail? Before drawing conclusions, confirm what the numbers actually represent — a value that is missing (never measured) is not the same as a genuine zero, and a handful of pages is a thin base to generalize from.

Example

Suppose two keyword runs both report an average word count near 1,400 for the pages that rank. In the first run the distribution is tight, with most pages between 1,300 and 1,500; in the second it is wide, ranging from 600 to 2,400. The averages match, but the distributions tell different stories: the tight run points to a defensible target around 1,400, while the wide run says length is not a settled factor for that query and a single number would be misleading.

Important considerations

  • A distribution describes what compared pages look like — it does not establish that a factor causes ranking. Statistical association is not causation.
  • The average alone can hide the shape. Two comparison sets with the same mean can spread very differently, which changes how confidently you can pick a target.
  • Small SERP samples make distributions unstable; a few pages can swing the pattern, so weight a wide, thin spread cautiously.
  • Provider-sourced values are comparative indicators measured on their own scales, not Google’s internal scores. Read the shape relative to the set, not as an absolute grade.
