What it means in RankGear
In RankGear, a density metric expresses how concentrated something is relative to its container rather than as a raw tally. Instead of reporting that a page contains a term twelve times, a density figure divides that count by a denominator — total words, total elements, or some other defined base — and reports the resulting share. This is what lets a 400-word page and a 4,000-word page sit side by side in the same Density sheet: the numerator alone would favor the longer page, but normalizing by length puts both on comparable footing. RankGear surfaces these figures in dedicated Density sheets and their associated reports, where each value is a ratio, not a count.
How to interpret it
Read a density value as a proportion, and always keep its denominator in view — the same numerator produces very different densities depending on what it is divided by. Check the sample the figure was drawn from: a rate computed over a handful of SERP results is far shakier than one drawn from a large, consistent set. Watch the spread as well as the average, and distinguish a genuine zero (the thing was measured and simply absent) from a missing or unmeasured value, because the two mean different things when you act on them.

Example
Suppose two competing pages both average the same density for a target phrase across a Density sheet. On paper they look identical, but one clusters tightly around that average while the other swings widely from page to page. The tight distribution gives you a defensible target to aim for; the wide one warns that any single figure is unstable and that a range, not a point, is the honest recommendation.
Important considerations
- A density metric is descriptive. A value that correlates with higher-ranking pages does not show that hitting that value causes a page to rank — statistical association is not causation.
- Density figures are only as trustworthy as their sample. Small SERP samples can be unstable, so a rate drawn from few results should be treated as a hint, not a threshold.
- Always confirm the denominator and whether a zero is measured or merely missing before you treat a density value as a target.
