What it means in RankGear
RankGear reports a positive correlation in the correlation tables that summarize an analysis run. For each of the factors it measures, RankGear pairs the factor’s value on every result with that result’s numeric rank position, then reduces the pattern to a single signed number. When that number is positive, the two quantities rose together across the pages in the run — the results carrying larger values for the factor also tended to sit at the larger (further-down) rank positions. It is a description of the shape of the data in front of you, not a verdict about the factor.
How to interpret it
Read the sign first, then the strength. A positive sign only tells you the direction of the relationship; a value close to zero means the tendency is faint, while a value nearer the top of the scale means the pattern held consistently. Because rank positions count upward from the best result (position 1 is the top), a positive correlation with rank position points the “wrong” way for a factor you would expect to help — it associates larger factor values with lower placements. Always weigh it against the sample: a handful of results in the correlation table can produce a strong-looking number that would not survive a larger or steadier SERP.

Example
Suppose an analysis run pulls the top 20 results for a keyword and one factor — say, the count of outbound links on the page — shows a positive correlation of about +0.30 with rank position. Reading that plainly: across those 20 pages, the ones with more outbound links tended to appear further down the results, and the ones near the top tended to carry fewer. The value is modest, so the tendency is real but loose; several top pages could still break the pattern.
Important considerations
- A positive correlation is an association, not a cause. It never shows that raising the factor would move a page up or down — only that the two moved together in this measurement.
- Direction is tied to how rank is numbered. Since a lower position number is a better placement, a positive correlation with rank position generally favors the lower-placed pages, not the top ones.
- Small SERP samples are unstable. A correlation drawn from a short results list can swing between runs, so treat a single strong number with caution.
- Factor values come from third-party providers and are comparative indicators for lining up like with like — not scores Google assigns.
