What it means in RankGear
Some of the factors RankGear tracks are not measured on a continuous scale. Instead of a count, a length, or a ratio, they answer a yes-or-no question: is this element on the page or not? RankGear classifies those as binary signals and treats them differently from numeric factors. This classification drives strategic chart selection — when a factor can only be a 1 or a 0, RankGear favors a chart that shows the split between the two groups (how many top pages have the element versus how many do not) rather than a distribution or trend line that would be meaningless for two-state data.
How to interpret it
Read a binary signal as a proportion, not an average. The useful question is what share of the competing pages carry the feature and whether your page sits with the majority or the minority. Because the values are only 1 and 0, a “mean” of 0.8 simply means 80 percent of the sampled pages have the element present. Also confirm which state the signal is actually recording: a 0 can mean the feature is genuinely absent, or that it could not be measured on that page — the two are not the same, and only the first is evidence.

Example
Suppose the factor is “has an FAQ schema block.” Across the ten top-ranking pages RankGear sampled for the query, eight include it and two do not, so the signal reads 0.8 as a group proportion. Your page scores 0. The chart makes the gap immediately visible: you are in the minority on a feature most competitors carry, which flags it as something worth testing rather than a value you would try to tune upward or downward.
Important considerations
- A binary signal tells you presence or absence, not degree — there is no “more” or “less,” only in or out.
- Distinguish a true 0 (feature absent) from an unmeasured or missing value; a signal that could not be captured is not evidence of absence.
- A high presence rate among top pages is a comparative pattern, not proof that adding the feature will move rankings — statistical association does not establish causation.
- Small SERP samples make these proportions unstable; a two-page swing can shift the split noticeably when only ten pages were measured.
