Search Result Link Text Has Ellipsis

This factor reports whether the clickable link text of a parsed SERP result contains three consecutive periods (...). It returns 1 when that sequence is present and 0 when it is not — a value of 1 is neither good nor bad on its own, since an ellipsis usually reflects source text or search-engine truncation rather than anything you control.

What it measures

This factor reports whether the link text of a search result contains three consecutive periods. It is a simple presence check on the visible link text of a parsed SERP result — nothing more. It does not judge quality, and it does not measure how much text was cut; it only records whether the ... sequence appears.

How RankGear measures it

RankGear searches the result’s link text for the literal sequence ... — three plain period characters in a row — and returns 1 when that sequence is found, otherwise 0. The match is on the literal three-period string only.

ValueMeaning
1The link text contains three consecutive periods (...).
0The link text does not contain that sequence.

How to optimize it

Treat this as an observation, not a target. Write a concise, descriptive title and let the search engine determine how it is presented. Avoid manually inserting ellipses into a title to influence this reading — doing so manipulates the observation without improving the result, and an ellipsis in the SERP often comes from the engine truncating your text rather than from anything you wrote.

Important considerations

  • This detects three literal periods (...), not the single Unicode ellipsis character (…). A title that uses the true ellipsis glyph will read as 0 here.
  • An ellipsis may reflect the source text itself or search-engine truncation of a longer string — the factor cannot tell which.
  • Result presentation varies by query, device, and time, so the same page can read 1 in one capture and 0 in another.
  • A value of 1 is not inherently beneficial. This is a descriptive signal that relates to how a result is displayed within a measured result set; it does not cause a page to rank and is not a target to chase.
